The Sign in the Field

If you've flown into or out of Gatwick recently there's a good chance that you've noticed our sign. In fact that might even be how you found our site.

Measuring 100m by 18m it conveniently sits directly below the Gatwick flightpath displaying our website address out for all to read.

How We Did It

The first step was to plot out the area using a computer. The text is based on the system font used by your PC - the same font you see when you enter a url into your browser.

It is an un-anti-aliased font, meaning that it's edges are not smoothed out by the computer to. In essence each character is made up of solid blocks. This approach made applying the font to the field achievable. As my friend quite rightly observed when we were plotting this scheme: "Curves will only end in Brittneys" (that's tears to you and me).

For example the plotted area for a 'w', looks like this:

 

Although this looks pretty unimpressive from this distance it works fine from 100ft up - just as this 'w' is perfectly readable to you now.
